How do you feel about bathrooms? To me, bathrooms should not be boring! Yes, they serve a purpose, but who says they can’t be fun too? One of my favorite places to create a vibe is actually in the bathroom. The space is small, but there are so many fun things you can do to start adding personality in your bathroom.
Add Wall Features
With any bathroom transformation, the first place I would start is the walls. There are SO MANY fun things you can do with your walls no matter where you are in your DIY journey. It can be as simple as changing the paint color. (I’m a sucker for crisp white walls and modern greens.) Or installing wallpaper. Between traditional and removable wallpaper there are endless possibilities.
If you are wanting to take on a project with a bit more detail, try adding some shiplap or board and batten to create the mood you are looking for. That’s what is great about DIY! It is all about bringing your preferences to your space. Your personality and your style.
Ceiling Treatments
One of my favorite projects of all time was transforming a builder-grade bathroom into what I now lovingly call the star bathroom. There are so many pops of personality in this room, but one of the standout features is the wooden beam ceiling.
Ceilings are often forgotten. They are blank spaces that seem to just be there. But it doesn’t have to be that way! When I added tongue and groove pine boards and beams to the star bathroom it instantly felt like a high-end spa. It added so much personality and excitement to the room and it can be the same in your bathroom too!
Depending on your style, you could install painted shiplap and faux beams on the ceiling like I did in my son’s room. Or even build picture perfect beams to add a little extra something to the space. You will not regret adding fun details to the ceiling of your bathroom.
Change up Cabinetry
Try changing up the cabinetry in your bathroom to incorporate your personality. Cabinetry is such a big part of a bathroom, but it isn’t always as cute as you want it to be. This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of what you have and start from the beginning. Try painting the cabinetry you already have to fit the vibe of your bathroom. Paint is always a great starting point and will give your cabinetry a custom feel.
You can also try switching out all of the cabinet fronts and drawer faces with new ones. Your bathroom most likely has a perfectly good setup, so you don’t need to scrap everything. You just need to add more personality. Refacing saves you time, money, and headache, and you don’t have to eat takeout every day for months without a working bathroom! Nieu makes switching out door fronts so easy and affordable. Have you heard of Nieu Cabinetry? I am in LOVE with them! So much so that I actually collaborated with them and created my own line of modern cabinet fronts.
Update Your Linens
Modern linens are a great way to add pops of personality in your bathroom. They are decorative but also serve a purpose. I mean, what is better than stepping out of the shower and wrapping yourself up in a pretty towel? If you haven’t shopped at Olive and Linen yet, you need to try them out! They even gave me a discount for you too! My code is ANGELA30.
Olive and Linen has the best products! They have a wide variety of towels you can use throughout your house, not just in the bathrooms. Plus they also carry bath mats, shower curtains, bathrobes, etc. All of their products are made from hand-loomed Turkish cotton that is free from toxins so that you can give your family the best.
Bring in Faux Plants
I love adding personality into my spaces with greenery! But, as much as I’d like to have a bunch of thriving houseplants around, it’s just not the case. I really wish I had a green thumb! Instead, I use faux plants. No matter what type of budget you are working with, I guarantee there is some type of faux plant that will fit into your project and actually look real!
Stenciling the Floors
Stenciling the floors of your bathroom is another great way to add personality to your bathroom. It is also a great way to say goodbye to ugly, outdated tile without demolishing the whole floor. Seriously, not only is painting and stenciling your tile floor easy, but it’s also the most affordable way to renovate them. New York Times actually featured one of my projects where I stenciled the floor! If you want to add some flair to your bathroom check out this post about 3 different ways to stencil your tile floors.
Switch out Light Fixtures
Not all DIY projects have to be big to be impactful. That is why I love switching out light fixtures, especially in a bathroom. There are so many unique light fixtures that not only bring light to the space, they bring big personality. Light fixtures can really transform your bathroom into those cute Pinterest images we all love. Check out this post where I share all of my favorite fixtures.
