You can create a unique feel in your room when you pick the right rug. In general, larger rugs help open up small spaces, especially when they are neutral colors. When it comes to the size of the rug, just remember, the general rule of thumb is to buy the largest rug that will fit in your room while keeping about 18 inches around the edge of the rug free. Level Up Light Fixtures
You know I love a good light fixture! Not only are they decorative, but add more light into your space. Did you know that adding more light actually makes your space feel larger? I know we are talking about small spaces, but the key to decorating a small room is to utilize every ounce of space. To do this, you can create storage to give your stuff a place in a basket. Baskets and crates are a great way to organize because you can tuck them under a table or in a bookshelf when your items aren’t being used.
You can also utilize all of your space by going vertical. Floating shelves are a great addition to small spaces. Floating shelves move your eye up higher on the wall which helps create a larger feel.
Does your small space have awkward nooks or recesses? Don’t let that space go to waste. Remember, we are trying to maximize the space we have. Instead of feeling stuck, create one of a kind elements like a built-in floating desk or bookshelf. This will help you use all the space you’ve got.

Window treatments are a great way to add personality to your space while also letting in light. Choose window treatments that are cohesive with your overall vibe. You want to make sure that the window treatments you pick aren’t too heavy or bulky because that can cause your space to feel smaller instead of larger. Don’t worry, if your space is smaller because you are renting, you can still decorate with a feature wall. You just need to use removable (peel and stick) wallpaper.

When it comes to decorating, I feel like artwork is one of the easiest ways to go. You may think that you need smaller framed pieces because your space is small, but larger wall art will open up your space. It creates visual interest like feature walls that draw you in. Can you imagine how cool a floor-to-ceiling wood art piece would be? If you aren’t into wood art, enlarge family pictures to oversized ones and frame them. I did that in our small loft and it turned out great!

Mirrors have this way of making everything seem bigger than they really are. It is some of the best DIY magic around. Mirrors can be styled in a variety of ways. Try decorating with small clusters of mirrors mounted on the wall as artwork. You can also prop up a bigger decorative mirror on the table. But, for the biggest wow factor, grab a floor-length mirror. It will have an instant impact on your small space.
Keep Things Simple
Of all of these decorating tips, I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is to simplify. Since your space is small, you don’t have tons of room for lots of stuff. Minimize what you have and make sure everything has a purpose.
