And this DIY garage makeover was exactly that.
I’ve always dreamed of parking my vintage Bronco inside the garage. The only problem? There was absolutely NO room for it. Somehow the garage had slowly become the place where everything without a home… found a home.
You know the garage I’m talking about. 😅
So I decided it was time. Time to clear it out, make it functional again, and — because this is me we’re talking about — make it REALLY good-looking too.
And honestly? A few surprisingly simple changes completely transformed the space.
The Garage Before
Let’s just say she needed some love.
Before I could think about paint colors, flooring, hardware, or anything pretty, I needed to deal with the biggest problem: the stuff.
My goal was pretty simple:
I wanted a garage that actually worked like a garage…but didn’t feel like an afterthought.
That meant making room for the Bronco, creating better storage, updating the existing cabinets, adding a statement floor, and making the space comfortable enough that I actually wanted to spend time out there.
Here’s exactly what I did.
Step 1: Clean Out and Organize the Garage
First things first: clear. it. out.
Not glamorous. Very necessary.
I went through everything that had accumulated in the garage and started creating space. If you’re planning your own DIY garage makeover, don’t skip this part!
Starting with a mostly empty garage also makes it so much easier to see what you’re actually working with and decide what needs to stay, move, or go.
And suddenly…
There was room for a Bronco!
Step 2: Install Checkerboard Garage Floor Tiles
Okay, THIS might be my favorite part of the entire garage makeover.
Checkerboard garage floor tiles.
Would you expect anything less from me?
I used heavy-duty interlocking garage floor tiles that are durable, non-slip, and — most importantly — make the entire garage look completely different.
The tiles click together, so you can create the pattern as you go without dealing with a complicated flooring installation.
And the checkerboard pattern?! So. Good.
The garage floor tiles come in black, white, beige, graphite, red, and blue, which means there are so many different combinations you could create depending on your style.
Classic black and white? Yes.
Graphite and beige? SO pretty.
Red and white for a retro garage moment? I can see it.

Step 3: Give the Garage Cabinets a Makeover
Next up: the cabinets.
Instead of replacing perfectly good garage storage, I gave the existing cabinets a completely new look with paint and hardware.
I painted them Rock Bottom by Sherwin-Williams, which gave the garage this rich, dark backdrop that instantly made everything feel more intentional.
Then came one of my favorite little DIY tricks.
I took the cabinet knobs and gave them a quick dip in an antique brass solution.
Suddenly basic hardware looked aged, warm, and custom.
This is your reminder that you don’t always have to rip something out and start over. Sometimes paint + new hardware is all a space needs.
Step 4: Add Air Conditioning to the Garage
Pretty garage? Check.
Functional garage? Check.
But there was one more thing that was going to make this space WAY more usable.
Air conditioning.
Because nobody wants to work on projects in a boiling-hot garage.
I installed a MrCool DIY mini-split system, and I think it might be the unsung hero of this entire garage makeover.
Now the garage isn’t just somewhere to park the Bronco. It’s a space where I can actually work on projects and spend time without melting.

The DIY Garage Makeover Reveal
Okay, remember the messy garage from the beginning?
THIS is why I love projects like this.
The bones of the garage didn’t really change. I didn’t do a massive renovation or completely rebuild the space.
Instead, a few strategic updates made it feel completely different:
- Decluttering and reorganizing the garage
- Installing checkerboard garage floor tiles
- Painting the existing storage cabinets
- Updating the cabinet hardware
- Adding a DIY mini-split for air conditioning
- And finally giving the Bronco the parking spot she deserves
The result feels clean, bold, functional, and just a little unexpected.

You don’t have to redo your entire garage to make it feel better.
If yours is currently part garage, part storage unit, part I-have-no-idea-where-else-to-put-this zone, start with ONE thing.
Clear out a corner.
Paint the cabinets.
Change the hardware.
Add garage floor tiles.
Create better storage.
Sometimes one project creates enough momentum to make you want to tackle the next one.
And suddenly the space you’ve been ignoring becomes one of your favorites.
As for me?
I still can’t decide what I love most: the checkerboard garage floor, those dark cabinets with antique brass knobs…
…or the fact that my vintage Bronco is FINALLY parked inside. 😍
