Modern Boy’s Bedroom That Fits Your Aesthetic
I recently did something I’d never done before. I took myself on a solo trip. It was AMAZING. On that trip, I had a lot of time to dream up my next projects. First on my list was updating my second son’s room. I wanted it to feel like his, while still looking nice with the rest of the house. You know? Let me share with you this modern boy’s bedroom for my son, and my first steps to bringing the vision to life!
Bedroom Project #1 Moody Ocean Wallpaper Mural
I love when my projects make me feel something, and I really wanted this room to feel like I felt on my solo trip to Joshua Tree, California. So I decided to set the scene with a wallpaper mural. I found the perfect one from the company, Anewall. Technically the design is called Blue & Grey Cloud, but it also gives me moody ocean vibes. Which is just so calming! Before I could start putting this mural up, I first had to clear everything out of the room. Here’s some DIY reality for you, during this project I had to move my son’s bed out every morning and in every night so he still had a place to sleep. Luckily, he’s a trooper and put up with me! After I had the room cleared I brought in my supplies:
I did all the wallpapering myself for this project, so it definitely took longer. To start, I laid a strip of wallpaper face down on the floor on top of some craft paper. Then I poured some wallpaper adhesive into my paint tray, dipped my paint roller, and added the adhesive to the back of the mural. Sometimes I’d roll the adhesive on the wall too. Then starting at the top, I’d take the strip and carefully place it on the wall making sure it was straight. To get rid of any bumps I’d use my smoothing tool. I repeated the processes over and over again until the room was an oceany dream. What do you think? Do you love it?
Bedroom Project #2 Black Trim Window Refresh
After the wallpaper, It was time to update the window. People seem to have some strong feelings about removing or keeping shutters. I say, do what makes you happy. And for me, that was removing the shutters. After the shutters were off, I spray-painted the window frame black. If you do this, make sure to cover the window and surrounding wall with plastic. Then I used some PVC trim from New Panes to get the black grid look. Now just look at all the sunshine pouring through the window. I love it! Bedroom Project #3 Easy Floating Corner Shelves
Now onto some built-in corner shelves! When you think about corner shelves, think about building triangle boxes. Because that’s basically what you’re doing. To start, I first located the studs in the wall and then attached a piece of wood on both sides of the wall. This would be the shelf’s frame. Once that was in place, I cut and stained the rest of the pieces for the top, bottom, and front side of the shelf. For the stain, I used the color Early American by Minwax. After the stain dried, I grabbed all the pieces and secured them to the frame using my nail gun. I repeated these steps for each shelf, four altogether. Are they perfect? No, but for a kid’s room I think they’re going to work great! One last thing, I get lots of questions about where the plants are from. They’re a mixture of faux and real plants from Target and Ikea!
